Wearing and selling gold and metal watches

Question

Asalaamualaokum Hazrat. I’de like to know if it is permissible to sell gold coloured or any other coloured metal watches for ladies.

Answer

Wa alaykumussalam

Men are only permitted to wear one silver ring whereas women are permitted to wear items of both silver and gold. However, for both men and women to wear any other type of metal, such as: copper; brass; iron; zinc etc. is prohibitively disliked (makruh e tahrimi). It is also therefore prohibitively disliked to sell such items, because it is aiding in what is not permitted, and everything that leads to what is not permitted is not permitted, as mentioned in al-Durr al-Mukhtar and its respective commentary, Radd al-Muhtar [Radd al-Muhtar 9/595]

It is further stated in Fatawa Ridawiyyah when asked whether it is permissible for an individual to sell jewellery made from brass and iron to Muslims:

“To sell to Muslims is prohibitively disliked (makruh e tahrimi).” [Fatawa Ridawiyyah, old edition 9/133]

Thus, it is prohibitively disliked to sell metal watches of any colour to both men and women. Such items, however, can be sold to non-Muslims.

And Allah knows best.
